Welcome to the NGfL accessibility workshop
"The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect."
Sir Timothy Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web
These materials were developed for a single day accessibility workshop run by the now defunct NGfL. The copyright remains theirs, Becta's and whoever else I borrowed from with permission at the time.
With the closing of the NGfL it seemed a shame to loose these resources so I'm taking a chance, it's probably illegal, and sharing them as a learning resource with the rest of the world.
While I consider this to be vaguely unprofessional, the aims of the agencies involved are educational and to promote inclusion. And that's what I'm trying to do here.
If my viewpoint is found disagreable, by the copyright holders, I will remove these resources without quibble.
The National Grid for Learning (NGfL) technical standards reflect the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). Becta is offering a one-day invitation only workshop for content developers who have materials with good potential to support learning and teaching, to assist them in achieving Level A Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) conformance and NGfL accreditation
Within this workshop you will:
- Be guided through the legislation relating to website design;
- Learn about Level A WAI compliance;
- Learn how to test and apply those standards;
- Be trained to evaluate and resolve common accessibility issues.
The skills learnt can be applied to your own sites.
In order to evaluate the impact on this workshop, participants are requested to complete the workshop evaluation form, which is anonymous unless participants choose add their names. Participants may also be contacted two months after the event by phone to establish whether they have been successful implementing the planned changes and what barriers there were. Your participation in this process will help us to determine how effective and successful this workshop was, and contribute to the development of future events.
About this site
This prototype site is being developed to support content providers to gain WAI level A standards. It will be trialled and evaluated during the website accessibility workshop at The Orange Studio, Birmingham www.orangestudio.co.uk on Friday 26th November 2004. Participants attending the workshop will be given access to the site after this event for a limited time period of two months. Please note that the content is likely to change and develop as a result of feedback from the pilot workshop.
